The Hopkinton Gourmet is a locally owned coffee shop/catering business located at 43 Main Street in Hopkinton Massachusetts, 01748. The Hopkinton Gourmet is owned by a transplanted Englishman named David Philips.

 

 

 

David Philips is a wonderful gentleman who took ownership of The Hopkinton Gourmet in January of 2007. David moved into Massachusetts about 16 years ago due to his wife Charlotte being relocated for a position as a teacher.

David moved all the way from Kent England. Prior to coming to the States, he worked for a few 5 star hotels in England running their catering business. Even though he has a degree in accounting, he realized this was one of his passions.

 His 1st position here in Massachusetts was for the Swiss Hotel in Boston. From there he took a a few positions in Tyngsboro Massachusetts at Stonehedge, a high end hotel, and The Vespa Country Club, a beautiful golf course. His last job before buying The Hopkinton Gourmet was as a kitchen manager for Whole Foods Market.

 David realized that he really wanted his own business. He wanted to be able to do things his way and not be stuck in a corporate environment.

The Hopkinton Gourmet has allowed Philips to achieve one of his dreams. One of the best things about David is his warm personality. He has brought this persona to the Gourmet. One of the 1st things you will notice upon entering this local shop is the fact David knows everybody by name. The Hopkinton Gourmet truly feels like the famous Boston Bar Cheers. Not only does David know your name but he knows what your regularly order. His memory is impeccable.

One Monday morning I sat and watched David greet approximately 15 people by name. It was unbelievable! David says he loves the face to face contact. He says he feels many of his customers are there for the same reasons. His analogy is that it is a lot like walking into the village pub back in England.

David has relied on his wife Charlotte for her decorators touch.On the outside in the warmer months you will find beautiful windows boxes bursting with fresh flowers and a sandwich board advertising "Best Iced Coffee". The interior is inviting with sunny yellow walls and green trim. There are round tables and bar stools overlook the large front window. A hutch displays a collection of tea pots along with a selection of teas and coffees. A small collection of Hopkinton gear for sale and a community bulletin board are proudly displayed. This part of the community feel David has achieved in his short time in Hopkinton.

Besides the popular Red Barn coffee and tea some of the Hopkinton Gourmet specialty's are bagels and muffins, low fat yogurt loaf and pastries including danish, scones, strudel cakes, and cinnamon rolls. For lunch Boars Head deli meats are featured including smoked turkey, ham, roast beef, tuna, chicken salad, veggie, and grilled chicken. There are also salad and soups.                                                                                                                             

On the catering end of the business you will find your standard hot entrees including lasagna, broccoli and pasta, baked ziti, chicken parmesan, piccata, and marsala. There are also some English favorites including home made sausage rolls, Bread and butter pudding, and sticky pudding.

Dave has a real passion for his business and eventually would like to expand his operation either at the present location or somewhere else in town. The name Fremias Bistero is always a possibility. Fremias comes from his three children's names Francis, Emily, and Mia. I wish Dave Philips well....he is a great person. Carbone's Restaurant located on 280 Cedar Street (Rte 85) in Hopkinton MA has been a traditional Italian/American Restaurant for the last 74 years. Three generations of Carbone's have kept this place growing for many years. This Hopkinton MA landmark opened for business in 1933 under the management of Edward Carbone who named his establishment, "The Good Fellows Club." He was soon joined by his mother and father who began to serve home-made pasta, fried chicken, and veal cutlets.

When Edward left to serve in the armed forces during World War two, his parents continued operation of the restaurant until his return. The capacity of the restaurant at the time was 10 to 15 diners. After the death of Edwards father in 1945. the other Carbone son, Peter, joined his mother and brother after his release from the armed forces in 1946. By this time the expansion of the now famous restaurant was underway.

In 1944 the restaurant was expanded and a cocktail lounge was added. The restaurant became more and more popular and the soon enough the Carbones realized another expansion was necessary. Carbone's Restaurant was again expanded in the 1950's this time with purchase of an additional 5 acres adjacent to the property. This time the kitchen was made larger as well as the parking lot and storage areas. A few years later the old Carbone's homestead adjacent to the restaurant was torn down to accommodate the present dining room. The last expansion took place in the 1960's with the addition of another cocktail lounge.

Carbone's interior was remodeled in the 1990's. Presently, Carbone's Restaurant is a favorite spot for many family's in the surrounding towns. The food, although not extravagant is reasonably priced. Some of the signiture dishes include the Chicken and Veal Parmigiana. The pizza at Carbones is also quite tasty. Carbone's draws quite a weekend crowd. During the work week this is a popular spot for lunch with some of the local business's along with the older set who stops in for a bite to eat.

My parents Ted and Carol Gassett, took me there regularly as a kid growing up in town. I always looked forward to going to Carbone's as the staff was always fun and friendly. Through my parents, I have grown up knowing the Carbone Family. Maryann and Peter Carbone still can be found mingling with their guests in this family restaurant.

If your in the mood for a casual weekend Italian dinner, I would be sure to give Carbone's a try!

Kudos go out to Tim Kilduff, Ruth Gorman, Parks and Recreation Chairman Al Rogers, and veteran Mike Shepard for their help in fund raising for revitalzing the Hopkinton town common.

This new group is calling themselves the "Friends of the Common". The groups mission is to refurbish the gazebo, improve the landscaping, and restore the fountain to working order.

The gazebo was built in the 1980's and was dedicated to the veterans of the town of Hopkinton.

The new group hopes to raise enough funds to repair the roof, replace any rotted wood, fix moisture problems in the basement storage area, make electrical repairs, and lastly make the gazebo more accesible to those that are physically challenged.

The hopkinton Atheletic Association is supporting the effort and started the fundraising efforts by donating $5000.

The Parks and recreation department is responsible for overseeing the common. The group had asked for $60,000 to repair the gazebo at town meeting but did not receive the required vote necessary.

As part of the revitalization the group has asked Roy Macdowell of the Macdowell Companies, who is developing the Weston Nurseries project, to come up with a landscaping plan. There are a number of trees on the common that are dying and need replacement. Some of the trees that have been planted over the years have crowded the common as well. The trees that have caused the crowding are the Norway Maples which are a dominate species that are known to have a large spreading canopy that can kill off other species of trees.

As far as the fountain goes, resident Jeff Furber has obtained $20,000 of Community Preservation Act funds that will help go toward this project.

A true landmark in the Town of Hopkinton, known as Weston Nurseries, will undergo quite a change in the not too distant future. Pardon the pun, but the landscape in the Town of Hopkinton will be forever changed because of the sale of this massive piece of property. 

The sale was completed last week when Weston MA based Roy MacDowell of Boulder Capital completed a $23.7 million dollar deal to purchase the property. The land purchased is approximately 700 acres. Boulder Capital plans to build a community called Legacy Farms.Legacy Farms would include 940 residential units with a mix of single family homes, apartments, town-homes and condominiums. Some of the homes would also be "affordable" units under the state's guidelines for affordable housing. This venture would also include 450,000 square feet of commercial and retail space. There would be 500 acres left undisturbed.

The commercial and retail portion of this project would certainly help with the burden of taxes. This monumental piece of land first went under agreement back in December of last year (2006) when Boulder Capital signed a purchase and sale agreement with the Mezitt Family who currently owns the property. The land has been owned by the Mezzits for generations but due to some financial problems it needed to be sold in order to emerge from bankruptcy. The town had the first opportunity to buy the Weston Nurseries property due to the fact that it was agricultural property that was taxed at a reduced rate under state law Chapter 61A. The vote at Special town meeting in June, however, was for the town of Hopkinton not to buy this property.

There is much to be done before a shovel is put in the ground. There will be plenty of issues to talk about such as traffic, water and sewer, as well as determining the architecture of the retail site and developing a master plan. The developer will be asking for zoning changes to the property but has not determined exactly what they will be requesting at this point. There will be numerous Hopkinton town Boards involved in the process including The Zoning Advisory Committee, Board of Selectmen, School Committee, Conservation Commission, and Planning Board.

The Zoning Advisory Committee is the board in Hopkinton that oversees any zoning changes. Not all towns have a ZAC. Boulder Capital must also submit their plans through the Massachusetts Environmental Protection Act (MEPA). Any Zoning changes that occur on the property may happen in one of two ways.  It could be an overlay district or a re-zoning of the property. An overlay district means the original zoning stays in place but there is a layer on top of that with different restrictions. For the Weston Nurseries property it, that would be single family lots with one acre zoning. Any zoning changes would have to be done so at a town meeting.

Boulder Capital plans on taking its ideas to the planning board and neighbors in the fall. Things are certainly going to get interesting in the town of Hopkinton. This was one of the most controversial decisions for the town of Hopkinton in many years. Growth and taxes in town have been big issues as the town's population has exploded in the last two decades. Hopkinton offers great access to highways, terrific schools, and small town feel without the typical chain store establishment such as McDonald's, that other neighboring towns have.

Change is inevitable....Hopkinton looks forward to guiding that change in a favorable way over the next ten years.
