Strong Internet Presence Leads to Letter From Jail!

JailIf you have ever read my blog articles you know that I am proud of the fact that both my Massachusetts Real Estate website and blog can be found in most local Real Estate searches. Some of the content I provide my readers is also much more broad in nature and will also be found for more national related topics like Real Estate capital gains for example.

When we create content online sometimes the places people find you can be VERY far reaching. What has to be the most bizarre piece of mail I have ever received arrived today in my work mail box!

The letter came from a jail in Kentucky and was clearly marked so on the front of the envelope with "Inmate mail not responsible for the content". I have provided the letter below for your enjoyment with the gentleman's name crossed out.

Apparently I am this inmates Realtor of choice for finding a nice piece of land up in Maine! I know my Real Estate friends up in Maine are probably salivating over the chance to land this referral since I am not licensed in Maine - LOL

Prison letter

Just to be clear the gentleman did not indicate when he will be out of the slammer. Because of my generous nature I am willing to pass this on to any Maine Realtor for a very low referral fee of only 5% - LOL

Of course I am going to request that you bring mace, Ginsu knives, and take a few lessons in karate. After all I will be expecting to be paid and that will not happen if you don't make it out of the woods alive:)

Now, Bill . . . we must be tolerant of all people--no matter who they are and where they come from. It is interesting that what you say travels far and wide--sometimes to areas that you have not imagined!

Well it's good to know that this inmate has, not only free medical, 3 meals a day, cable TV...and access to the internet!

Who knows, maybe he's been in for a while and he's amassed a nice sum of money making those license plates!!!

It sure is amazing sometimes how people find you. It is interesting that an inmate would have computer privileges as well.

Posted by Bill Gassett, Metrowest Massachusetts Real Estate (RE/MAX Executive Realty) over 9 years ago

Bill, this is probably the funniest post I have read to date. Im sure if you treat him right he will refer you to several others looking for land with lots of trees to hide in.

Wow Bill, that really is too funny. It is amazing how well we Realtors attract such a broad range of personalities

You are referring this one out? You don't want to drive into the woods in the middle of "no where" for this person? Go figure...

Posted by Terrie Leighton, Reno Real Estate Agent ~ Selling Homes in Reno (Ferrari-Lund Real Estate ) over 9 years ago

Lori - I am still trying to decide if I want to persure the covicts market:)

Janice - Sometimes we certainly do!

Terrie - If the person was female and hot looking I might have considered it - LOL

Hi Bill!

LOL~ Maybe he has a lot of money stored up from his trustworthy ways. Who knows, he might have a big bag of cash stored in those woods in Maine. :)

Ken - I am trying to decide if there is a competing Realtor here in my town that needs a good client:)

Lisa - You must get lead like this too!

Posted by Bill Gassett, Metrowest Massachusetts Real Estate (RE/MAX Executive Realty) over 9 years ago

Bill, do you think the guy would consider New Hampshire? Only Joking...Maine would be a perfect place to send this fellow...where the man and manly and the Moose are scared.

Posted by Steve Loynd, 800-926-5653, White Mountains NH ( Alpine Lakes Real Estate Inc., ) over 9 years ago

Steve - I almost gave you a call to see if you would handle Maine:)

Dan & Amy - this goes beyond an internet presence!

Judy - My phone has been ringing off the hook. Man there are some desperate Realtors out there:)

Ed - Do you want to head up to Maine with me and be my body guard?

Marilyn - Thanks...are you sure you don't want this valuable lead?

Michael - Wow collect calls is even better - LOL

Strange but true Lisa. When I 1st started reading it I thought someone was playing a joke on me!

Posted by Bill Gassett, Metrowest Massachusetts Real Estate (RE/MAX Executive Realty) over 9 years ago

Bill....when I was at Costello R.E., an inmate named James at Walpole use to call the girls in the office and wanted to talk to them....he'd call collect.....got their names and number from the homes magazine....that was 20 years ago.....we'd laugh about it....someone accepted one call and never again.

Posted by Barbara Todaro, Marketing Agent for The Todaro Team (RE/MAX Executive Realty ) over 9 years ago

Barbara that is pretty funny and even more scary to think about. The fact the guy was calling women takes it to the next level of WATCH OUT!

Ad I Ran in a National Magazine that Resulted in Me Calling the FBI

Posted by Jason Crouch, Broker - Austin Texas Real Estate (512-796-7653) (Austin Texas Homes, LLC) over 9 years ago

Carol & Tom - The last place I would ever expect to get a lead from would be a jail.

Mara- I like your idea of a prison!

Jason - I went over and took a look at your article. You are right that is pretty creepy!

Posted by Bill Gassett, Metrowest Massachusetts Real Estate (RE/MAX Executive Realty) over 9 years ago

That is quite funny.  First things first. The lender should have a good time getting his W2s and 1099s for the past two years, his other records and his credit score.  But who know, he may be an all cash buyer, especially if he robbed a bank.

Posted by Jane Peters, Los Angeles real estate concierge services (Home Jane Realty) over 9 years ago

Bill - I think this is proof of your blogging and marketing.  Consider it proof that it works!  I suggest that you refer it to a Male agent.  You never know...he could have wealthy relatives too, that just might need your services in MA !

Posted by Christine Bohn, The Bohn Team, Gainesville FL (RE/MAX Professionals) over 9 years ago

Hi Bill!  You see!  This is what happens when you're a TOP Re/Max agent!!  This is just hilarious--and you didn't make it 'members only' - he could be reading!  ooooooo...

It is kind of interesting that he sounds sincere yet he does not provide any contact information. It is kind of interesting he sought me out given the fact I am in Massachusetts.

I have the letter on my wall...maybe I will here from him again.

Bill to bad I don't do loans in Maine, because this would have been a good one to write about.  I wonder if they would of had to clear me for visitation rights so that I could get the loan application signed.  Getting documentation like the last two paystubs within the last 30 days might prove to be a bit of a challenge, but we will figure something out :) :) :)

Bill, You are being read far and wide, that's for sure!  Maybe after being in jail that guy wants an honest person to help him (I'm sure honesty is in short supply there!!).  Be sure to let us know who the lucky Maine realtor is going to be :)!!

mineral rights around a lake in ME?  Must be killing this guy to read all these posts but obviously he is not able to communicate out by email (hence the letter).  I'll make sure to lock the office door if you are working late Bill... stay safe!

My dear friend,

What have you gotten yourself into? I must say Kudos to you. I think it's a fair reach-out, after all - even an ex-convict needs a place to live. What better place than to reach out to awesome agents here in the 'Rain.

This is too funny. What was it that made him pick you, I wonder...

Sounds like this guy has too much time on his hands.  He's a dreamer!

Posted by Katie McBride, The McBride Team (RE/MAX Executive Realty) over 9 years ago

It was a well written letter with good penmanship.  They apparently know what they are looking for which is refreshing since we often spend time with buyers who still aren't sure what they want :-)

Posted by Cindy Jones, Pentagon, Fort Belvoir & Quantico Real Estate News (Integrity Real Estate Group) over 9 years ago

Ed maybe I should be put in protective custody...I hope not LOL I did find the comment about mineral rights interesting.

Loreena - This has to be the most unusual letter I have ever received!

Cindy - That is one of the real interesting aspects of the note. It looks incredibly neat and well written.

Posted by Bill Gassett, Metrowest Massachusetts Real Estate (RE/MAX Executive Realty) over 9 years ago

I know you could not have made this up Bill, but even so, I can't believe the letter!

Posted by Barb Szabo, CRS, E-pro Realtor, Cleveland Ohio Homes (RE/MAX Trinity Brecksville Ohio) over 9 years ago

Now that is something else! I'm sure it was quite a shock to receive that piece of mail.

Posted by Darryl Glade, New Orleans Real Estate (RE/MAX N.O. Properties) over 9 years ago

That is pretty neat, at least you know that they did not firewall that jail cell and he found you via your SEO blogs! Maybe it can be an all cash transaction for the Maine agent? :)

Posted by Eileen Hsu, LICENSED REAL ESTATE SALESPERSON (Douglas Elliman Real Estate) over 9 years ago

Getting contacted from someone in jail is not very common that's for sure!  Interesting piece of mail to receive.

Posted by Patricia Beck, Colorado Springs Realty (RE/MAX Properties, Inc., GRI, CDPE) over 9 years ago

Bill, this is one of the funniest posts I've read in quite awhile and you never know, he may have a bundle of cash socked away for use after his release! I was a bit confused by his reference to weeds, Is that why he is in the hoosegow or is that a crop he is planning on producing on his farm?? ;-)

Posted by Russell Lewis, Broker,CLHMS,GRI (Realty Austin, Austin Texas Real Estate) over 9 years ago

Russell - Where does he mention weeds. I think you mean "trees". It was pretty weird to get this letter...that's for sure!!

I honestly thought it was someone playing a trick on me when I 1st started to read it.

Posted by Bill Gassett, Metrowest Massachusetts Real Estate (RE/MAX Executive Realty) over 9 years ago

That is the funnies thing I have seen! AT least he was contacting you about real estate and not anything else! THe letter made me think of the unabomber! LOL!

Posted by Kristi DeFazio, Colorado Springs Rea lEstate 719-459-5468 (RE/MAX Advantage) over 9 years ago

Kristi - It is pretty funny. At 1st I thought it was not real but after looking over the envelope and seeing it was from a jail I knew it was:)

Posted by Bill Gassett, Metrowest Massachusetts Real Estate (RE/MAX Executive Realty) over 9 years ago

I can only imagine the supplies he needs out in the woods with no one around near a lake and a fixer upper, no less. Sounds like a scary movie. So, who are you sending to meet him? :)

Posted by Jen Bowman, Realtor - Anna Maria Island & Bradenton FL (Keller Williams on the Water) over 9 years ago
